SMSC and British Values

Our school expectation is that every member of our team conducts themselves with pride and role models our school values for others. Our learning of SMSC and British Values is enhanced and developed through our Personal, Social, Health and Economic and Religious Education curriculum. British Values are also interwoven into everything we do in our school community.

We believe that this implicit alongside explicit learning helps to deepen our children’s self-confidence, appreciation, empathy, respect and understanding of others; in all aspects of their lives now and for their futures.

Diversity is embraced in our community and our curriculum complements the ‘Fundamental British Values’ defined by the government as:

Democracy
The Rule of Law
Individual Liberty
Mutual Respect
Tolerance of those of Different Faiths and Beliefs

At Wicklea we believe these values are fundamental human rights which we actively promote in conjunction with our own school values of Respectful, Ready & Resilient.

Below are examples of the ways British Values and our own school values are promoted within Wicklea, both implicitly and explicitly.

In everything we do…

As a part of our daily school life, we have school and class rules, voting on class and school wide issues, certificates, stickers and raffle tickets etc. In lessons we empower children to make careful choices, participate in paired work, group work, turn taking, sharing, tolerance, support, respect and empathy. These are all taught and modelled by all members of staff.

We encourage children to be role models for others and encourage them to actively demonstrate positive behaviours and attitudes at all times. In each class we have elected School Councillors, who explicitly role model this to other pupils and gather pupil voice feedback regularly to ensure that all feel valued and celebrated. We promote roles and responsibilities in all classrooms through a vast array of ‘jobs’ for to ensure that all pupils take responsibility for our school environment and those within it.

Our Year 6 pupils are responsible for a wider range of school ‘jobs’ including: lunch trolley assistants, assembly assistants, house point monitors, etc. We also have a team of sports leaders who lead sporting challenges at lunchtimes and announce results in Friday assemblies.

Behaviour

We have a clear behaviour policy which teaches boundaries, recognises pupils who fulfil expectations, rewards those who go above and beyond, and supports pupils to improve if they do not live up to the expectation. We believe in children reflecting upon mistakes, ensuring that all pupils are listened to, conflicts are resolved peacefully, children have a clear understanding of why their behaviour was inappropriate and how they could manage it differently in the future. We promote mutual respect at all times.

At Wicklea pupils are actively encouraged to make choices both in learning and at play, knowing that they are in a safe and supportive environment. As a school we educate and provide boundaries for young pupils to make informed choices, through a safe environment and an empowering education. Pupils are encouraged to know, understand and exercise their rights and personal freedoms and advised how to exercise these safely,

Curriculum

We ensure all objectives of the National Curriculum 2014 are covered through our school based curriculum. A curriculum that actively encourages our children to consider the past and aspire for the future. Our History, Geography and Art curriculum particularly enables pupils to develop an understanding of how people and events in the past and present have shaped the society we live in today. Through whole school assemblies pupils are encouraged to think carefully about the part they have to play in society, now and in the future.

Teaching and learning of Religious Education activities ensure pupils develop a secure understanding of the UK as a multicultural society; promoting tolerance and understanding of commonalities and uniqueness.
